Okay, so today was a bit of a mixed bag, but it all revolved around this idea I had: “able hon friends basketball.” It sounded cool in my head, I guess. The plan was to get a game going with some friends, focusing on those who maybe aren’t super athletic or experienced with basketball. You know, make it accessible and fun for everyone. “Able” referring to all skill levels, “hon” as in honing our skills (even if they’re non-existent), “friends” because, well, friends, and “basketball” because, duh, that’s the game.
Getting the Crew Together
First thing I did was hit up my group chat. Sent out a message like, “Yo, anyone down for some super chill basketball later? No pressure, just for laughs.” I got a few “maybes” and a couple of “I’m in!” replies. One friend, bless her heart, said, “I haven’t touched a basketball since middle school, but I’m game!” That’s the spirit I was looking for!
Finding a Court
Next challenge: finding a court. I drove around to a few local parks. The first one was packed with some serious-looking dudes playing a pretty intense game. Definitely not the vibe I was going for. The second park had a court, but it was under maintenance. Finally, the third park had a free court, a little worn down, but perfect for our needs. It even had a slightly wonky hoop, which I figured would level the playing field even more.
The “Game”
We ended up with five people, which was perfect for some casual half-court action. Let me tell you, it was… interesting. There were air balls, a few accidental travels, and a lot of missed shots. But there was also a ton of laughter. My friend who hadn’t played in years actually made a basket, and we all went wild. I tried a fancy behind-the-back pass, which ended up going straight out of bounds, but hey, it was worth a try.
- Highlight of the day: My friend’s unexpected basket.
- Lowlight of the day: My failed behind-the-back pass.
- Funniest moment: When we all tried to do a coordinated team cheer and completely messed it up.
Wrapping Up
We played for about an hour, just until we were all good and sweaty and tired. Nobody kept score, and nobody cared who “won.” It was just about getting together, moving our bodies, and having a good time. Honestly, it was exactly what I needed. And, I learned, don’t trust your behind-the-back skills without practice. Success! My “able hon friends basketball” idea wasn’t a total flop, that is pretty good.
