Okay, so today I decided to get back on the ice and check out the local woburn hockey scene. I haven’t played in ages, so I was a little rusty, to say the least!
First things first, I dusted off my old hockey bag. It was buried in the garage, under a pile of who-knows-what. I unzipped it and, man, the smell of old gear hit me like a slapshot. Good times… and maybe a little bit of mildew.
I pulled out all my equipment, checking everything over. Skates, helmet, gloves, pads… the whole nine yards. Everything seemed to be in decent shape, considering it hadn’t seen the light of day in years. I have a wooden stick.
I sharpened my * is important!
Next, I headed down to the rink. I wasn’t sure what to expect – would there be a pickup game going on? Would it be mostly kids? Turns out, it was a pretty good mix of people.
I laced up my skates, feeling that familiar tightness and the slight wobble as I stood up. It took a few minutes to get my “sea legs” back, but I slowly started skating around, getting a feel for the ice.
- At the begining,I fell down.
- Then,I can skate slowly.
- Finally,I can join a game!
There were a few guys practicing shots, and some others just passing the puck around. I joined in a passing drill, and my passes were… well, let’s just say they weren’t exactly tape-to-tape. But hey, I was out there!
Feeling the Burn
After a while, a small pickup game started up. I jumped in, and instantly realized how out of shape I was. My lungs were burning, my legs were screaming, and my stickhandling was atrocious. I definitely missed more shots than I made. I maybe made two * guy nearly took my head off with a slapshot, but I made a nice glove save. I think it was more luck than skill, to be honest.
But you know what? It was awesome. Even though I was sucking wind, it felt great to be back on the ice, playing the game I love. It reminded me of why I used to play so much, and it definitely motivated me to get back into it more regularly.
So, that was my woburn hockey adventure for today. Rusty, tiring, but totally worth it. I’m already looking forward to next time… though I might need to do some cardio before then!
