Alright, so today I’m gonna talk about my day checking out the Army women’s tennis scene. It was a pretty cool experience, and I took a bunch of notes, so let me share how it all went down.
First thing I did was try to dig up some background info on the team. Turns out, this Army West Point Women’s Tennis team is pretty serious. They’re aiming to win the 2023 PL Championship, and it’s a big deal ’cause they’re hosting it this year! It’s a pretty big deal! This got me even more hyped to see what they were all about.
Then I went down a bit of a rabbit hole reading about the history of women’s tennis at West Point. Apparently, it wasn’t really a big thing until the 1960s. That surprised me a little, but hey, things take time to develop, right? From their schedule of 2024-25, they still working hard on the ground.
The Actual Visit
So, I managed to find out where they were practicing and headed over. I observed one of the practice sessions. I watched them do some drills, work on their serves, and play a few practice matches. The players were really putting in the work.
Key Observations
- Team Spirit: One thing that really stood out was the team spirit. These women were cheering each other on, giving high-fives, and just generally being super supportive. You could tell they were a tight-knit group.
- Skills: These ladies can seriously play! Their serves were powerful, their returns were on point, and they were moving around the court like it was nothing. I tried to keep up with my camera, but they were quick!
- Coaching Staff: The coaches seemed really invested in their players. I heard the head coach Paul Peck, who’s been leading the team since 1995, had them do specific drills. I don’t know much about tennis strategy, but they seemed to know what they were doing!
After watching them practice, I got a chance to see their recent records. It mentioned something about them taking down Air Force 4-1 on USTA College Match Day back in February. That’s pretty impressive, right? I also learned that they achieved 6 singles victories against St. Bonaventure in October, and did well in doubles at the Fordham Invitational. Sounds like they’ve been having a pretty good run recently.
I also found out that the team is doing well in their region. They finished No. 10, which is a big accomplishment. There was also some mention of a generous donation from Herb and Alan Lichtenberg, who are apparently alumni, and the Class of 1955. It’s always cool to see people supporting college sports.
Overall, it was a really cool experience getting a behind-the-scenes look at the Army women’s tennis team. They’re a dedicated group of athletes, and it’s clear that they’re working hard to achieve their goals. I’m definitely going to be following their progress this season, and I recommend you do too. I can say I learned a lot and had a blast documenting it all. Keep an eye out for these players – they’re definitely ones to watch!
