Well, I reckon y’all heard ’bout Birmingham-Southern, huh? It ain’t a name you hear too often these days, ’cause the poor ol’ school done closed its doors for good, after bein’ around for more’n 160 years. That’s a mighty long time, ain’t it? The baseball team, they had their last game in the Division III World Series. It was a real close one, too! They lost, 7-5, on the very same day the school shut down. Talk about bittersweet.
Now, lemme tell ya somethin’ ’bout that school. It wasn’t no tiny little place neither. It was a private liberal arts college, all the way over in Birmingham, Alabama. Yessiree, it had quite the history, though I reckon folks from around here might not know much ’bout it. And don’t go thinkin’ it was just some ol’ run-of-the-mill college, neither. They had students there with an average GPA of 3.71, which is higher’n most folks’ scores. That right there says somethin’, don’t it?
But, oh, it wasn’t always smooth sailin’ for them folks at Birmingham-Southern. Nope. If ya look at their past, you’d see a bunch of misfortune. Go back to the ’70s, and you’ll see the school was rocked by tragedy. There was a murder, and after that, they had to put up a big ol’ fence ’round the campus to keep things safe. And it didn’t end there. In 2006, some former students went and committed arson on a bunch of churches, and that whole mess caused a scandal that didn’t help the school’s reputation none.
But folks still stuck with it, at least for a while. That school had a lot of pride, and a lot of folks loved their baseball team. Now, in 2024, they went all the way to the Division III College World Series, though it was a sad sight when they lost, 11-10, to Wisconsin-Whitewater. It was one of them walk-off home runs that ended the game—right there in front of everyone. Heartbreakin’, I tell ya. And just like that, the baseball team was finished too. They went down swingin’, but in the end, they couldn’t quite pull through. And just like the school itself, that was the end of that chapter.
So, what happens when a school like this closes? Well, ya got folks still talkin’ ‘bout their memories and their legacies. Some might say the baseball team had their day in the sun, and others might say it was the school’s history that mattered more. Either way, there’s a lot of folks out there who still remember Birmingham-Southern—be it for the good times or the bad.
Now, don’t go thinkin’ you can’t find out what happened in those last games. Y’all can still find them scores online. The ESPN website keeps track of things like that, so if you’re wonderin’ how the Panthers did, you can catch up on all them highlights, even if the school ain’t around no more. Ain’t that somethin’?
So, rest in peace, Birmingham-Southern College. You had your share of ups and downs, but there’s no doubt you made your mark. And though the doors are closed now, folks won’t forget what you done. If not for the education, then at least for the baseball team that gave it their all. That’s somethin’ to remember, for sure.
