Okay, so I’ve been trying to fix this “hockey neck” thing for a while now. You know, that forward head posture that makes you look like you’re always about to headbutt someone? Yeah, that’s the one. I started noticing it a few months back when I caught my reflection in a store window. I thought, “Dang, when did I start looking like a question mark?”
First, I tried to just be more mindful of my posture. I’d catch myself slouching, straighten up, and within minutes, I’d be back to my old ways. It was like my head had a mind of its own and was determined to reach for the horizon. I think i need to change that.
Then, I started doing some stretches I found online. Some neck rotations, chin tucks, the whole shebang. Honestly, I felt like a bobblehead doing these things. And let me tell you, the chin tucks? They make you look like you’ve got a double, maybe even a triple, chin going on. Not a good look, especially when you catch your wife trying not to laugh.
- Neck Rotation
- Chin Tucks
I kept at it for a few weeks, but I wasn’t really seeing much improvement. Maybe a little less stiffness, but my head was still way out there. And do not laugh at me!
Next Steps
So, I decided to get a bit more serious. I booked an appointment with a physical therapist. This guy, he really knew his stuff. He showed me some more targeted exercises and also gave me some tips on setting up my workspace better. Turns out, having your monitor too low is a major culprit in the whole “hockey neck” saga.
I’ve been following his advice for about a month now, and I’m actually starting to see a difference. My neck feels better, and I think my head is slowly making its way back to where it should be. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m feeling optimistic. I even caught my reflection the other day and thought, “Hey, I’m starting to look a little less like a question mark and a little more like a normal human.”
It’s a long road, but I’m determined to get my head on straight, literally. No more looking like I’m perpetually about to check someone into the boards. I am getting better now!
