Oh, honey, you ever heard of Georgetown University? It’s this big place, all fancy-like, up there in Washington, D.C. Now, you might think it’s just some regular school, but let me tell ya, their basketball team, the Hoyas, well, they’ve been putting out some big names over the years. Lotta folks from Georgetown done went on to play in the NBA, and I reckon it’s no surprise, considering the talent they bring up. Let me tell ya a little bit about these boys, the ones who made it to the big leagues.
Now, first things first, there’s Patrick Ewing. You can’t talk about Georgetown and not mention him! That man, I tell ya, he was a giant. Played from 1981 to 1985, and back then, he helped Georgetown win the NCAA Championship in 1984. He went on to have a long, successful career in the NBA. Played for the New York Knicks mostly, and was just a big ol’ presence on the court. The way he blocked shots, it’s like he had a hand the size of a frying pan! Oh, he’s one of those players that folks still talk about to this day, you hear his name, and people remember.
Then there’s Allen Iverson. Now, I don’t know if you’ve heard of him, but honey, this boy was quick as a jackrabbit. Iverson, he played for Georgetown in the 1994 and ‘95 seasons, and then went on to become the first overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft. Ain’t that something? He’s one of those players that didn’t need to be the biggest guy out there, but he had heart, and that’s all you need sometimes. He went on to have a stellar career with the Philadelphia 76ers, and folks still remember him for his scoring ability and that attitude he brought to the court. He was little, but he was mighty.
Another big name from Georgetown, y’all might’ve heard of him too, is Alonzo Mourning. He played there in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, and just like the others, he didn’t waste no time making a mark in the NBA. Drafted second overall in 1992, he went on to play for the Miami Heat and was known for his shot-blocking and his fierce competitiveness. Man, that guy could protect the basket like a mama hen protecting her chicks. Got himself a couple of championship rings too, and that’s no easy feat in the NBA.
There’s also this big ol’ fella named Dikembe Mutombo. He played at Georgetown from 1991 to 1996, and let me tell ya, his defense was something else. He didn’t score much, but he sure made up for it by stopping folks from scoring. He was like a wall, and if you tried to go up for a shot, you might as well be tryin’ to throw a rock at a brick wall. He had this signature finger-wag, and let me tell ya, it became one of the most famous gestures in basketball. Drafted in 1996, he went on to have a long career, playin’ for several teams, and earned himself a spot in the Hall of Fame.
Now, let’s not forget about some of the other boys that came from Georgetown. Greg Monroe, for example, he came outta Georgetown in 2010. He played there just one year, but he sure made an impact. He averaged a solid 12.7 points and 6.5 rebounds, and was drafted 7th overall in the NBA Draft. He played for a few teams, and while he didn’t become a huge star, he still had a pretty good career.
There’s also Jeff Green, another guy from Georgetown who went on to the NBA. He was drafted in 2007 and played for several teams. He’s one of those steady players who just always seems to be in the right place at the right time. He’s been through a lot in his career, but he’s still out there, playing the game.
But, you know, there’s been a whole lot more players who came outta Georgetown and made their way to the NBA. I reckon there’s at least 52 of ‘em. They played for a bunch of teams, some made it big, others maybe didn’t make as much noise, but all of ‘em made their mark in some way. And all of ‘em have something to be proud of. Georgetown sure knows how to churn out some basketball talent, that’s for sure.
The Hoyas, they play in the Big East Conference, and they’ve always been known for having a tough, defensive style of play. You won’t find no weaklings in their lineup. These boys, they train hard, and they play with a lotta heart. They got a rich history, and they keep pushin’ out players who go on to do big things. And it ain’t just the past either, oh no, they got players today who are makin’ waves in the NBA. So you just watch out, there’s more Georgetown talent comin’ up through the ranks.
Now, if you ever get the chance, you oughta take a look at some of these games, or maybe follow some of the Hoyas who are still in the league. You might be surprised by how many of ‘em make it big. Georgetown’s got a legacy, and it ain’t goin’ nowhere. Who knows, maybe the next big thing in basketball’s comin’ right outta Georgetown. Ain’t that something to think about?
