Hey guys, it’s been a while! Today, I wanna talk about something I’ve been digging into lately – the Florida Mr. Basketball award. It’s a big deal in high school hoops, and I got curious about who’s won it over the years.
So, first things first, I started by looking up what this award is all about. Turns out, it’s given out by the Florida Dairy Farmers, Inc. and the Florida Athletic Coaches Association. They get a bunch of high school coaches and media folks to vote on it. Seems pretty legit.
Next, I wanted to find a list of winners. I hit up the internet and found some information, although it wasn’t all in one place. I noticed that the 2024 winner is this guy Cameron Boozer, a junior from Christopher Columbus High School in Miami. Apparently, he also won it last year in 2023! That’s pretty impressive for a junior.
- 2024: Cameron Boozer (Christopher Columbus High School, Miami)
- 2023: Cameron Boozer (Christopher Columbus High School, Miami)
- 2022: Brice Sensabaugh (Lake Highland Preparatory School)
- 2021: Dallan Coleman (West Nassau High School)
Then I dug a little deeper. I found out that Brice Sensabaugh, who won in 2022, had a crazy comeback story. He missed his whole junior year because of knee surgery and then came back to lead his team to the final four. That’s some serious dedication.
I also stumbled upon some older winners, like Vince Carter from 1995. He’s a legend! And there was this guy Lucas Barnes from 1996. I didn’t recognize all the names, but it was cool to see the history.
Digging Deeper Into the Award
I was really getting into this, so I decided to see if I could find anything about the voting process. One article mentioned that Cameron Boozer’s win in 2024 was decided in a “final round of voting.” Makes me wonder how many rounds there are and how close the votes get.
I also found a mention of a guy named Larry Humes, who was Mr. Basketball in Indiana back in 1962. This was a bit off-topic, but his story was interesting, too. He was a 5’10” guard who played for Carmel High School, coached by his dad. Pretty cool family story there.
Anyway, that’s what I’ve found so far about the Florida Mr. Basketball award. It’s been a fun little research project. It’s always cool to learn about the history of these things and the stories of the players who’ve won. Makes you appreciate the game even more. If any of you have more info or stories about this, feel free to share! I’m always up for learning more.
