Well, let me tell ya ’bout this basketball game, Gonzaga versus Santa Clara. Sounds fancy, huh? I don’t know much about these city folk games, but I watched it, kinda sorta. Too much runnin’ and jumpin’ for my old bones, but hey, it was on the TV.
First off, they say Gonzaga is a big deal, some kinda “Number 23” team. Don’t mean nothin’ to me, numbers are for countin’ chickens, not playin’ ball. But these fellas, they sure could run. Fast, like a greased pig at the county fair. Santa Clara, though, they weren’t no slouches neither. They gave Gonzaga a run for their money, that’s for sure.
Now, one game, the score was somethin’ like 77 to 76. Santa Clara won, I think. Some fella named Bal, he made a basket right at the end. Sneaky little fella, quick as a whip. Gonzaga folks, they looked mighty upset. All that runnin’ and jumpin’, and then losin’ by one point. Musta felt like gettin’ a flat tire on the way to the market.
Then there was another game, I saw bits and pieces of it. This time, Gonzaga, they won. Big score, like 94 to 81. They were shootin’ that ball like it was nothin’. Swish, swish, swish. Santa Clara, they tried, but Gonzaga was just too strong that day. It’s like tryin’ to stop a runaway tractor, ain’t gonna happen.
They played these games in a place called Leavey Center, in Santa Clara, California. California, that’s way out west, ain’t it? Never been there myself. Too far for this old lady. And these referees, Carr and Ayers, they were blowin’ their whistles all the time. Sometimes I didn’t even know why. Seems like they just liked to hear themselves whistle, like my old rooster back on the farm.
I heard tell that Gonzaga has this coach, Mark Few. Been there a long time, they say. 25 years! That’s longer than I’ve had my prize-winnin’ quilt. He must be doin’ somethin’ right, I guess. They say he made Gonzaga famous, like them Hollywood movie stars. Well, good for him, I say.
- Gonzaga’s got a fancy coach, been there forever.
- They play fast, lots of runnin’ and jumpin’.
- Santa Clara, they’re tough too, don’t let ’em fool ya.
- Sometimes Gonzaga wins, sometimes Santa Clara wins. That’s how it goes.
And there was this other game, somethin’ about Gonzaga beatin’ UCLA. Another fancy team, I reckon. 79 to 76, close game again. This fella Strawther, he made a big shot. Folks were cryin’ and cheerin’, the whole shebang. Basketball sure is excitin’, even if I don’t always understand it.
They even went to somethin’ called the “Final Four” and the “National Championship” one time. Big games, I guess. Lost to North Carolina, though. Close game, 71 to 65. Heartbreakin’, I bet. Like losin’ your best hen to a fox. But hey, that’s life, ain’t it? You win some, you lose some. Just gotta keep on pluckin’ along.
So, that’s what I know about this Gonzaga and Santa Clara basketball thing. Lots of runnin’, lots of shootin’, lots of winnin’ and losin’. More excitin’ than watchin’ paint dry, that’s for sure. But I still prefer a good old-fashioned hoe-down any day.
In short, these basketball games are excitin’. Sometimes Gonzaga wins big, sometimes it’s real close, and sometimes Santa Clara sneaks in a victory at the last second. Just like life, you never know what’s gonna happen!
