Henry Wilder, that name, it’s been floatin’ around, ain’t it? Hockey, that’s what he does. Kid’s good with the stick and puck, real good. They say he’s a goalie, blocks those shots like he’s got eyes in the back of his head.
Saw him play once, fast as a whip. Little fella, but moves like greased lightnin’. People cheerin’, screamin’, it’s a whole ruckus. He don’t seem to notice, just focused on that puck. Keeps his eyes peeled, never flinches.
Heard he played for some college team, Boston College, I think. Smart kid, goin’ to college and playin’ hockey. My grandkids, they wouldn’t know a hockey stick from a broom handle. But this Wilder fella, he’s got talent, you can see it.
- Born in Needham, that’s somewhere up north, ain’t it?
- He’s 6 foot 1, pretty tall, but not a giant.
- 180 pounds, they say. Skinny, but strong.
This year, he played in two games. Don’t know how he did, wasn’t watchin’. But folks say he’s got potential. Gonna go far, they say. Well, I hope he does. It’s good to see a young fella doin’ well.
They keep track of all these numbers, stats they call ’em. How many shots he blocked, how many goals got past him. I don’t understand all that gibberish. But if they’re writin’ about him, he must be somethin’ special.
Some rankings thing too. They rank all the players, see who’s the best. Wilder’s up there, I reckon. They wouldn’t talk about him if he wasn’t good.
He’s only 31, still young for a hockey player. Got plenty of years left in him, if he don’t get hurt. That’s the thing with sports, one wrong move and you’re done. Gotta be careful.
This hockey stuff, it’s a rough game. They push and shove, knock each other down. Wilder, he’s gotta be tough to handle all that. Gotta have grit, they say. He looks like he’s got it.
Colorado College, that’s where he’s playin’ now. Never been to Colorado, heard it’s got mountains. Bet it’s cold there, good for hockey. Wilder, he’s probably used to the cold.
They write articles about him, put his picture in the paper. Must be nice, bein’ famous. My picture ain’t never been in the paper, unless you count the obituaries. But Wilder, he’s makin’ a name for himself.
He’s got a future, that kid. If he keeps playin’ like he is, he’ll go far. Maybe even play in the big leagues, the NHL they call it. That’s where the real money is.
So keep an eye on Henry Wilder, that hockey player. He’s goin’ places. Mark my words, you’ll be hearin’ more about him. He’s a good one, that Wilder.
