Well now, let me tell ya, if ya ever get a chance to hear about the hockey at Holderness, it sure ain’t like them fancy city teams, no sir. Holderness been playin’ hockey since the early 1900s, long before most folks even knew what a puck was! And they ain’t like them other schools that play indoors all nice and warm. Oh no, they play out there in the cold, where a good wind can freeze yer nose right off. It’s the way hockey’s meant to be, or so they say. Just look at ’em go!
Now, I don’t know much about them fancy stats or all them numbers they throw around, but I do know this: Holderness ain’t no slouch when it comes to playin’ hockey. They compete in the New England Prep School Ice Hockey League, which ain’t no small thing. They play hard, and they play right. You know, in a way, it’s like how we used to do things in the old days—hard work, no shortcuts, and you leave it all on the ice. Every game is a test of who’s tougher, who’s faster, and who’s got more heart.
Oh, and you ever hear of the Groton/Lawrence Tournament? Well, Holderness sure made a name for themselves there. They beat Groton, 7-4, in a real tough match. It was back-and-forth, like a tug of war, but in the end, Holderness came out on top, and you shoulda seen them boys cheer! That’s what I call real team spirit. They got that fire in ‘em, just like the old folks did in the good ol’ days.
Now, don’t go thinkin’ they’re just a bunch of good-for-nothin’ kids runnin’ around. Holderness has got some real talent. Take a look at them player stats for the 2024-2025 season, and you’ll see there’s some top goal scorers on that list. Ain’t no surprise there, ‘cause these kids been trainin’ hard for years. Most games played? Well, let’s just say they ain’t sittin’ around. They’re out there, day in and day out, perfectin’ their skills. It ain’t just about the game, it’s about the grind. And boy, do they grind!
And let me tell ya, these kids don’t just play for the school. Some of ‘em even get noticed by the big leagues. There was this one fella, real young, played for Holderness and got noticed by Hockey Canada. They said he was exceptional, and next thing ya know, he’s playin’ junior ice hockey at the tender age of 15. He was picked first in the draft by them Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League, which I reckon is a big deal. Makes ya proud to know they come from good ol’ Holderness, don’t it?
So, what makes Holderness hockey special?
- They’ve been at it for over a century, and they still play outside just like the old days.
- They compete with the best in the New England Prep League, takin’ on top schools year after year.
- They’ve got some real talent comin’ through their ranks, and they ain’t afraid to show it.
- They know how to win when it counts, like that big win at the Groton/Lawrence Tournament.
- They produce top-notch players who go on to make waves in junior leagues and beyond.
So, I reckon if you ever find yourself in Holderness, maybe you’ll catch a game or two. Watch them boys skate, hustle, and give it all they’ve got. It’s a sight to see, I promise ya that. And if you ever think about playin’ hockey yourself, just remember, it ain’t about the rink or fancy equipment, it’s about the heart, the hustle, and the love of the game. And I think that’s what Holderness does best.
