Okay, so the other day I got this idea to make a “Jack O’ Lantern Basketball.” Sounds kinda weird, I know, but I thought it would be a fun little project. I mean, who doesn’t love Halloween and basketball?
First things first, I grabbed a basketball. It was just an old one I had lying around in the garage, a bit deflated, but it would do the trick.
Carving Time!
Next up, the pumpkin part! I sketched out a classic Jack O’ Lantern face on the ball with a marker. Big triangle eyes, a crooked smile – you know the drill. It took a couple of tries to get it looking right, the marker kept slipping on the ball’s surface.
- Eye one: A bit wonky.
- Eye two: Better, but still not perfect.
- Mouth: The hardest part! Kept smudging it.
Once I was (kinda) happy with the design, I carefully grabbed a Sharpie marker. This was going to be the tool for make it permenant, so you know you have to focus. The surface of the basketball is rubbery, so i had to draw slowly or else it would look weird.
After I made the face black, i grabbed some orange paint to make the basketball looks like real pumpkin.I found that it is hard to paint on the rubber, so i painted several layers to make sure it sticked on it.
The Finished Product
And, there you have it! My very own Jack O’ Lantern * is not perfect, but it made me *’s silly, it’s a bit messy, but it’s definitely got that Halloween spirit. Now I just need to figure out if I can actually play with it… maybe just some light bouncing. Wouldn’t want to ruin my masterpiece!
