Well now, let me tell ya a little somethin’ ’bout them Mass High School Hockey rankings. Ain’t nobody knows better than them folks who live and breathe hockey ’round here, and they sure don’t make it easy on the players neither. Every year, them teams are scrappin’ and fightin’ to make their way up the list, and it’s a long road to the top, believe me. Now, if you’re a parent or a fan or just someone lookin’ to see who’s where, you best be payin’ attention to the MIAA Power Rankings, ’cause them are the ones that really matter when it comes to showin’ who’s the best of the best.
Now, this here MIAA Power Rankings thing, it’s what all the schools are workin’ towards. Every team sends in their scores, and they get all compiled in this big ol’ list, and them rankings show who’s really playin’ hard and who’s just puttin’ on a show. The first official list comes out after about 3 or 4 weeks into the season, so you gotta be patient, but once it’s out, you can see where each team stands.
Some of them teams just don’t mess around. Take St. John’s Prep, for example. That team’s got a record of 10-3, and you can see them sittin’ real pretty in them rankings. Them boys know what they’re doin’ on the ice, no doubt about it. They got a score of 18.68, with a 9.9 plus-minus, and you better believe that means they’ve been pushin’ teams around and showin’ they ain’t no pushovers. These kind of numbers don’t lie, folks. If you wanna be at the top, you gotta work for it.
But it ain’t just about one or two teams. No sir, there’s a whole bunch of them schools out there givin’ it their all. The rankings are based on the scores that get entered by the teams into this fancy system called Arbiter. Now, don’t ask me how it all works, but I know it’s what’s behind them numbers you see up on the board. Every team’s doin’ their best to climb that ladder, and the ones who stick around near the top are the ones who are really makin’ a name for themselves.
The key to movin’ up them rankings, though, is consistency. If you win a few games and then lose a couple, you’re not gonna get very far. But if you can string together some solid performances, game after game, that’s when them rankings start lookin’ mighty fine. And if you’re just a fan lookin’ to cheer on your team, well, you best be payin’ attention to who’s doin’ what. The teams that are rankin’ high now might not be there at the end of the season, and that’s the fun of it all.
Folks who don’t follow high school hockey might not know how much effort goes into this. Them boys out there on the ice, they’re out there workin’ their tails off every practice, every game, just tryin’ to get better. And them coaches? They ain’t no slouches neither. They’re out there studyin’ the game, lookin’ at them rankings, and tryin’ to figure out how they can keep their team at the top. It’s a battle, plain and simple, and one that don’t slow down just ’cause it’s gettin’ cold outside.
If you’re one of them folks who likes to follow the rankings all season long, you might wanna check out MaxPreps. They got the full list of teams, and you can see how your favorite school’s doin’. But you don’t have to wait too long to see them rankings either, ‘cause like I said, that first list comes out after about a month or so of playin’. And after that, it’s a steady stream of updates as them teams fight to hold onto their spots.
It’s always somethin’ to watch, though. Every year, new players come up, and old teams drop down. It’s like a big ol’ shuffle, and it’s all about who’s got the best game when the season rolls around. Ain’t no givin’ up, no matter how tough the season gets. If you’re serious about your team, you’ll stay tuned and keep watchin’ them rankings, ’cause one good game can change the whole picture.
So whether you’re from St. John’s Prep or one of them other schools, you better be ready. Them rankings don’t lie, and if you ain’t keepin’ up, you’re gonna get left behind. Keep playin’ hard, and maybe next season, your team’s name will be at the top, and you can say you were part of that journey. But until then, don’t forget to check ’em rankings and see where your team’s at. They’ll tell ya everything you need to know about who’s leadin’ the pack and who’s still tryin’ to catch up.
