Finding The Basic Stuff
First things I do, fire up the old search engine. Just typed in “Matt Underhill hockey” to see what popped up. I wanted the basics: What team did he play for? What position? That kind of starter info to build my research.
I finded a few different hockey database sites. You know, the usual ones that have player profiles and stats. Found out he was a goalie, which, honestly, I didn’t know going in! I am geting new knowledge about him.
Diving into Stats
After I’d figured out the basics (goalie, played in such-and-such leagues), I wanted to see some numbers. I always think the numbers tell a story, even if you don’t know much about the sport.
- Checked out his save percentage.
- Looked at his goals-against average.
- Browsed through his games played per season.
I spent a good chunk of time just clicking through season by season, seeing how his performance changed over the years. Were there any big jumps? Any rough patches? I wanted to see the trend. The all process that I do is for getting his career trending.
Trying to Find Highlights or Game Footage
Stats are great, but they only tell part of the story. I wanted to see this guy in action. So, I searched for any kind of highlight reels or game *’s a long time journey for me.
This part was tougher. There wasn’t a ton of stuff readily available, at least not that I could find quickly. I did find a few mentions of specific games or tournaments, so I made a note of those to maybe try and track down later. And then I am keep doing my work.
