Hey guys, I want to share my experience with figuring out the MIAA D1 hockey rankings. It’s been a wild ride, to say the least.
So, I started digging into this whole ranking thing a while back. At first, I was just curious about how the teams were doing. I found out that the MIAA updates these rankings every few days, or something like that. It’s like, you gotta keep checking back if you want to stay in the loop.
Gathering the Data
I started by looking for the official MIAA stuff. They have a website where they post all this, I guess. They released a version of these rankings for Fall 2024.
- I spent hours just going through pages and pages of scores, stats, and standings. It’s a lot to take in, man.
- Then, they released some file named “MIAA boys hockey power ratings *”. I don’t even know what to do with an xlsm file.
Understanding the Rules
Then, there are all these rules about who can play on what team. Like, seniors can’t play on junior varsity teams, except for cross country, or something like that. And there’s a bunch of stuff about new students and eligibility. There are also some exceptions for cross country, and something about getting consent from the League Commissioner. I don’t know, it’s all pretty confusing. I just wanted to see who was winning!
Trying to Make Sense of It All
I tried to make a spreadsheet to keep track of everything. But it got messy real quick. There are just so many games, and the rankings keep changing.
I read somewhere that the end of the 2023-24 season was chaos. Apparently, there was a game that was tied 2-2 with only 4.1 seconds left. Can you believe that? I wasn’t even watching, but it sounds crazy.
And it seems like the whole season was kind of a mess. They said it was a “turbulent start” to the season. I guess there were a lot of upsets or something. I don’t know all the details, but it sounds like it was pretty dramatic.
Giving Up (For Now)
Honestly, I kind of gave up trying to figure it all out myself. It’s just too much, haha. I’ll probably just wait for someone else to explain it to me. But I figured I’d share my experience anyway. Maybe someone out there can make sense of it better than I can.
If any of you guys have a better way to track these rankings, let me know! I’m all ears.
