Okay, so yesterday I decided to get back into tennis after, like, a decade? I used to play a bit in high school, but I wouldn’t say I was ever really good. But hey, everyone starts somewhere, right?
First, I dug out my old racket from the garage. It was dusty and the grip was all worn out, but it would have to do for now. Then I headed to the local park where they have a few public courts. It was pretty empty, which was perfect because I definitely didn’t want an audience for this.
Warm-up
- I started with some light jogging around the court to get the blood flowing.
- Then, I did some basic stretches, focusing on my arms and shoulders. I definitely felt a bit stiff.
Basic Drills
- Forehands: I tried to focus on getting the right stance and swing. Most of them ended up in the net or way out of bounds.
- Backhands: Even worse than my forehands. I could barely get the ball over the net. It was like my backhand skills were completely gone.
- Serves: I remembered the basic motion, but the accuracy was just not there. I was aiming for the service box, and sometimes I was hitting in it.
I spent about an hour just hitting balls against the wall, trying to get a feel for the racket and the ball again. It was frustrating, but also kind of fun. I started to remember why I enjoyed tennis in the first place.
Cool Down
- I finished up with some more light jogging and stretching.
- My muscles were definitely feeling it, but it was a good kind of sore.
Overall, it was a humbling experience. I clearly have a long way to go before I’m any good at tennis again. But I’m determined to stick with it. I’m thinking of maybe finding a practice partner or even taking some lessons. I’ll keep you guys posted on my progress!
