Retro Tennis Fashion Trends from the 1980s You Need to Know
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Well, I tell ya, them ’80s sure had a way of makin’ folks look sharp out on that tennis court! Back then, tennis wasn’t just about hittin’ the ball back and forth; it was also about lookin’ good while doin’ it. People used to dress up for the game, and boy, they had all sorts of fancy clothes to wear!

In them days, tennis players had all kinds of styles goin’ on, dependin’ on what kind of player you were. You had your baseliners—folks like Lendl and Wilander who would stand back and just smack that ball from way behind the line. And then, you had your serve-and-volleyers—players like McEnroe, Becker, and Edberg who liked to get right up to the net and hit the ball before it came down. Both types had their own thing goin’ on, but no matter how they played, they looked good doin’ it!

Now, when it comes to fashion, the ’80s were somethin’ else! It wasn’t just about comfort—no sir! People cared about lookin’ real sharp. You’d see a lot of pastel colors back then. Boys were wearin’ them little polo shirts, real tight like, with fancy logos on the chest. And the gals, well, they had their little turtleneck sweaters that they’d wear with their skirts, makin’ them look like they were ready to go play some tennis and then go out to tea afterward!

And don’t forget them knee-high socks. Oh, Lord, they were everywhere! Some folks would pull ’em up real high, while others would fold ’em down a bit so they didn’t look too fancy. Either way, they looked cute with them short skirts and dresses. I tell ya, a lotta people were wearin’ skirts back then. Tennis skirts, to be exact. Real sporty-like, but still fashionable! They’d be a little flouncy, and you could always tell the difference between a tennis skirt and a regular skirt ’cause it had that little flare at the bottom. It made you look like you were ready for action, but still like you had some sense of style about ya.

Now, if you was talkin’ about accessories, well, that’s where it got interesting. I remember folks talkin’ about headbands and wristbands that players wore to keep the sweat off their faces. And let me tell ya, them wristbands weren’t just for show. They was practical! Made it so you didn’t end up with sweat all over your hands when you went to swing that racket.

Then, there were them sneakers. Oh my, them tennis shoes were somethin’ special! Back then, folks cared about the fit and the look of their shoes. Brands like Nike and Adidas were big on the tennis scene, and the shoes they made were built for comfort and speed. You needed somethin’ that could help you run across that court without trippin’ over yourself, and them shoes sure did the job.

And don’t forget about them tennis skirts! Yes, sir, they were all the rage. I reckon that was the time when tennis skirts really hit their peak. Between denim shorts and them space-age unitards, tennis skirts were the go-to for women. Some folks still wear ’em today, though they look a little different now, don’t they?

What I think is so funny is how some things never really change. You see, people nowadays still talk about retro tennis fashion. It’s like the ’80s never really left the tennis world. You can find all them old-school tennis outfits and accessories online. I’ve even seen some websites where you can get retro tennis outfits for a good price. Now, ain’t that somethin’?

Back in the day, folks didn’t have the internet to shop on. If you wanted somethin’ stylish, you had to go out to the stores, and maybe even wait for a special sale to get a good deal on them tennis clothes. Now, you can just look it up on your phone and get that retro look without even leavin’ the house!

To sum it up, the ’80s was a time when tennis was more than just a sport—it was a fashion statement! From them pastel polo shirts to them knee-high socks, folks sure knew how to look good while they were playin’. If you ever get a chance to pick up a retro tennis outfit, you’d be walkin’ in the footsteps of them players who changed the game both on the court and off!
