Okay, so I’ve been wanting a purple tennis skirt for ages. I finally decided to just go for it and make one myself! I’m not the best sewer, but I figured, how hard could it be? (Spoiler alert: harder than I thought, but still doable!).
Finding the Right Fabric
First things first, I needed the perfect purple fabric. I hit up my local fabric store, and let me tell you, there are SO MANY shades of purple. I spent a good hour just staring at bolts of fabric. Finally, I found this gorgeous, slightly stretchy, lilac-y purple material. It felt sporty and breathable, perfect for a tennis skirt!
The Pattern Panic
Next up: the pattern. I considered just winging it, but then I remembered my last sewing “adventure” (a very lopsided tote bag). So, I looked for a simple tennis skirt pattern.I found the most simple and basic one,It was just a few pieces – front, back, waistband. Seemed easy enough!
Cutting and Pinning (and Praying)
I carefully laid out the pattern pieces on my fabric, making sure everything was straight (ish). I pinned everything down, took a deep breath, and started cutting. This part always makes me nervous – one wrong snip and you’ve got a problem! Luckily, I managed to cut everything out without any major mishaps.
Sewing Machine Struggles
Now for the actual sewing. My sewing machine and I have a love-hate relationship. Sometimes it cooperates, sometimes it acts like a rebellious teenager. I threaded the machine (after a few tries), set the stitch, and started sewing the side seams. It went…okay. A little wobbly in places, but nothing too noticeable.
The waistband was a bit trickier. I had to fold it over and sew it in a way that created a casing for the elastic. This involved a lot of ironing and careful pinning. I definitely messed up a few times and had to rip out some stitches, but eventually, I got it to work.
The Elastic Battle
Inserting the elastic was another challenge. I used a safety pin to thread it through the waistband casing, which is a surprisingly fiddly process. It took a few attempts (and a few dropped safety pins), but I finally got the elastic all the way through and sewed the ends together.
The Final Result (Ta-Da!)
And…it’s done! It’s not perfect, by any means. There are a few wonky seams, and the hem is a little uneven. But you know what? I made it! And it’s a purple tennis skirt! I tried it on, and it actually fits pretty well. It’s comfortable, it’s the right color, and it has that sporty vibe I was going for.
- First, finding fabric and choosing the right one.
- Then, looking for the most basic pattern, and starting cut and pray.
- Thirdly,I used sewing machine to sew them up.
- The last, inserting the elastic finished the skirt!
I’m actually pretty proud of myself. It’s not perfect, but it’s my purple tennis skirt, and I learned a lot in the process. Maybe I’ll even make another one…in a different color, of course!
