Well now, let me tell ya ’bout them South Sudan basketball fellas, and what a thing it is! You know, them folks been through a whole lot, but they ain’t never given up. They’ve been shootin’ hoops, dribblin’ and passin’ like nobody’s business, and guess what? They made history, sure did! They earned the first-ever Olympic spot for their country. Now, ain’t that somethin’?
It happened just recently at the FIBA World Cup. Them boys went up against Angola, and let me tell ya, they wasn’t messin’ around! They whipped Angola good, 101 to 78! Ain’t that a score to be proud of? Now South Sudan’s got themselves a 3-2 record at the World Cup, and what’s even better, they became the best team outta all the African countries. Ain’t that somethin’ to talk ’bout at the dinner table!
But hold on, that ain’t the only thing they’ve done. You see, South Sudan’s basketball team, also known as the Bright Stars, they been makin’ waves in all them qualifiers. Back in 2023, in the World Cup qualification rounds, them Bright Stars didn’t lose a single game in the first round. Nope, not one! They finished up 6-0, lookin’ mighty fine! That’s right, all them folks was watchin’, and they was all talkin’ ’bout them. South Sudan was on fire!
Let me tell ya a little more. South Sudan went up against Morocco in them AfroBasket Qualifiers, and I reckon it was a sight to behold. The game was in Dakar Arena, and them boys didn’t back down one bit. They took the win, 82-66! Sure, they was behind a little bit at the start – they was down by 3 points after the first quarter – but by the time that final buzzer sounded, South Sudan had shown ’em who’s boss. They ended up on top, and the crowd went wild! South Sudan was marchin’ to the next round with their heads held high!
Now, for all y’all who might not know, the South Sudan men’s national basketball team was born back in May 2011. Yup, that’s right, just over a decade ago, and look how far they’ve come. From a young team, they’re now holdin’ their own against the big names in basketball. And they’ve got plenty of pride representin’ their country, South Sudan. It ain’t easy, but they sure make it look like it is!
It’s not just ‘bout the wins, though. It’s about what basketball does for them folks. Brings ’em together, gives ‘em hope, and lets ‘em dream big. And look at ‘em now – they’ve made it to the Olympics, somethin’ no one thought they could do. And you best believe, they ain’t stoppin’ there. These boys got a lot more fight in ‘em, and we all better keep an eye out!
South Sudan’s team, the Bright Stars, they’ve earned their name, and they earned that Olympic ticket too. So, next time you hear ’bout ’em, know this: they ain’t just playin’ basketball, they’re makin’ history. And that’s somethin’ worth rememberin’!
