Okay, so today I decided to mess around with this “takeaway football” thing I’ve been hearing about. It’s basically drills to practice forcing fumbles, interceptions, that kind of stuff. I’m no pro, just a guy who likes to stay active and try new things, so bear with me.
Getting Started
First, I dug out my old football from the garage. It was a little deflated, so I pumped it up. Then, I headed out to my backyard. It’s not exactly a regulation field, but it’s got enough space for me to move around.
The Drills
I didn’t really have a set plan, so I just kind of winged it. I started by tossing the ball up in the air and trying to strip it from myself as it came down. Sounds weird, I know, but it’s surprisingly hard! I fumbled it a bunch of times, but I also managed to knock it loose a few times too.
- Toss and Strip: Just like I said, throw the ball up and try to rip it out of your own hands.
- The Punch: I held the ball out in one hand and then practiced punching it out with the other. I tried to focus on hitting the ball directly, not just slapping at it.
- Imaginary defender swat.
After a while, my arms started to get tired, Felt good to get the action.
Wrapping Up
I probably only spent about 30 minutes on this, but it was a decent little workout. I definitely felt it in my arms and shoulders. And hey, I even improved my ball security a little bit (I think!).
It’s not glamorous, but it’s something. I’m thinking I might add this to my routine a couple of times a week. It’s a fun way to stay active and maybe, just maybe, improve my chances of not fumbling if I ever get into a real game of touch football. Who knows!
