Alright, let’s talk about this tennis net thing. You know, that thing you hit the ball over? Yeah, that one. It’s gotta be a certain height, they say. Something like 42 inches at the sides, where them poles are. And then, in the middle? It’s gotta sag a bit, they say. Down to 36 inches.
Now, why they gotta make it like that, I dunno. Seems like a lot of fuss to me. But, I guess it makes the game fair or somethin’. You hit that ball over, it gotta clear the net, see? And if it dips too low in the middle, well, that ain’t right, is it?
Why all the fuss about the height?
Well, I reckon it’s about makin’ sure everyone’s got a fair shot. If the net was too high, wouldn’t be able to get that ball over, would ya? And if it was too low, well, then it’d be too easy, wouldn’t it? Gotta have some challenge, right?
- 42 inches on the sides: That’s what they say, those rule-makers. Gotta measure it up, make sure it’s right. Don’t want no cheatin’, now do we?
- 36 inches in the middle: Yeah, it dips down a bit. Like a saggy old rope. But that’s how it’s supposed to be. Don’t ask me why, I just follow the rules.
And then there’s the width of it. Gotta be wide enough to cover the court, see? Can’t have the ball slippin’ around the sides, can we? They say it’s somethin’ like 42 feet across. That’s a lot of net, if you ask me.
You know, watchin’ those fellas on the TV, hittin’ that ball back and forth. Sometimes they hit it hard, real hard. And that net, it just stays there. Gotta be strong, I reckon. Made of good stuff.
Is it just a net?
Well, yeah, it’s a net. But it’s an important net. It’s the center of the whole thing, ain’t it? Without that net, you just got two fellas hittin’ a ball back and forth. No challenge, no excitement.
I seen folks get all worked up about that net. “It’s too high!” they say. Or “It’s too low!” Always complainin’. But, rules are rules, I say. Gotta follow ’em, or you ain’t playin’ right.
And sometimes, that ball hits the net, just barely grazes it. And then it goes over, right into the court. Folks call it a “let.” Means you get to try again. Lucky break, I guess. But that net, it always gets in the way, doesn’t it? Makes things interestin’, though.
So, next time you see a tennis net, just remember. It ain’t just some flimsy piece of string. It’s an important part of the game. Gotta be just the right height, just the right width. And it gotta stay put, no matter how hard you hit that ball.
And that’s all I gotta say about that tennis net. Now, go on and play yer game.
