Alright, so I wanted to make a football announcer script, you know, for fun, maybe for a local game or something. I figured, how hard could it be? Turns out, it’s more than just yelling “Touchdown!”
First, I watched a bunch of games. Not just casually watching, but really paying attention to what the announcers were saying. I noticed they weren’t just stating the obvious, they were adding context, player backgrounds, and even some humor.
Then, I started writing down phrases I liked. Stuff like:
- “He’s got wheels!”
- “Reading the defense like a book.”
- “He threads the needle!”
- “Unbelievable catch!”
I realized pretty quickly that I needed a structure. So, I broke it down:
- Pre-game: Introductions, team stats, maybe some player spotlights.
- During the game: Play-by-play, color commentary, highlighting key moments.
- Post game: Summarize the game, interview maybe player, talk about the key plays.
The Hard Part
The play-by-play, man, that’s tricky. You gotta be fast, accurate, and exciting. I practiced by myself, commentating on old games. It was… rough at first. I stumbled over names, got the down and distance wrong, and my “excitement” sounded more like I was surprised by a squirrel.
My first try was bad. I mean this is my record:
“Emm,running…running…eh…who is he? Emm, Jack? or Tom? Get down! Oh, no, no,no! What a pity!”
I kept practicing, though. I focused on being clear first, then worked on adding the flair. I also learned to anticipate the play a bit, so I wasn’t always reacting after the fact.
Finally, I tried it out at a small local game. It wasn’t perfect, but it was way better than my first attempts. People actually seemed to enjoy it! I still have a long way to go, but hey, it’s a fun hobby, and I’m learning something new.
I think the important is keep practicing and learning.
