Alright, let’s talk about how I got into this whole “UVM Hockey Coach” thing. It wasn’t exactly planned, you know? Just kinda happened.
So, picture this: I was browsing around, looking for something interesting to get involved with. I stumbled upon this opening for a hockey coach at UVM. Now, I’ve always loved hockey – played it as a kid, watched it religiously, the whole nine yards. But coaching? That was new territory for me.
First thing I did? I started digging into what it takes to be a hockey coach. I mean, I knew the game, but leading a team? That’s a whole different ball game. I read a bunch of articles, watched some videos of coaching clinics, and even reached out to a few coaches I knew to get their take on it. It was a bit overwhelming, honestly, but also pretty exciting.
- Looked up coaching requirements and certifications
- Talked to some experienced coaches about their day-to-day
- Started brushing up on the latest strategies and plays
Once I felt like I had a decent grasp of what I was getting into, I decided to go for it. I put together my application, highlighting my passion for the game and my eagerness to learn. I didn’t have any formal coaching experience, so I focused on my leadership skills from other areas of my life. I figured, hey, you gotta start somewhere, right?
The Interview Process
Then came the interview. Man, was I nervous. I met with the athletic director and a couple of other folks from the department. They asked me about my coaching philosophy (which I’d spent hours thinking about), how I’d handle different situations with players, and my vision for the team. I tried my best to stay calm and let my passion shine through.
After the interview, it was a waiting game. Days turned into weeks, and I started to get a little anxious. But then, finally, I got the call – they offered me the position! I was ecstatic. I couldn’t believe it. I was going to be a hockey coach!
Next up: I had to hit the ground running. I got to know the players, started planning practices, and immersed myself in the world of college hockey. It was a whirlwind, to say the least. There were definitely some bumps along the road – learning how to manage a team, dealing with different personalities, and figuring out the best strategies for our players. But you know what? I loved every minute of it.
It’s been a wild ride so far, and I’m still learning every day. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Being a UVM hockey coach has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It’s challenging, it’s exciting, and it’s a whole lot of fun. And hey, who knows where this journey will take me next?
