Well, let me tell ya ’bout this hockey thing, the Waterville Valley hockey tournament. Folks come from all over, it seems, for this here shinny game.
What’s it all about, this hockey tournament?
Now, I ain’t no expert, but from what I gather, it’s a big deal. They got teams, lots of ’em, playin’ hockey. Kids and grown-ups too, I reckon. They say it’s for families, so I guess that means the young’uns and their folks come on down.
- They got these games, see, and they play a bunch of ’em. Three, they say. Guaranteed. That means you get your money’s worth, I s’pose.
- And the games, they ain’t short neither. Twelve minutes a piece, they tell me. And they stop the clock, so it ain’t no runnin’ time like some of them other games.
- And if you’re good, real good, you get a prize. A “champ” they call ya. Or second best, that ain’t so bad neither, a “runner up.”
This here tournament, it ain’t just a one-day thing. Oh no. It goes on for a whole weekend. Friday to Sunday. Sometimes even longer, like for that Martin Luther King fella’s birthday, they go four days! That’s a lot of hockey, if you ask me.
Where’s it at, this hockey shindig?
They say it’s in a pretty place, this Waterville Valley. In New Hampshire, that’s up north somewhere. A resort town, they call it. Fancy, I bet. They got another one too, down by the sea, in Maine. Biddeford, that’s the name. They play a lobster tournament there. Don’t know if they play with lobsters, but that’s what they call it.
What else they got goin’ on?
Well, it ain’t just the hockey, see. They got camps, for learnin’ how to play, I guess. And they got this broomball thing. Don’t rightly know what that is, but it sounds like fun. And stick and puck, whatever that is. Sounds like they got somethin’ for everyone, long as you like hittin’ things with a stick.
How big is this thing, anyhow?
Big and small, they tell me. They got all kinds of tournaments. Some big, some small. So, I guess it don’t matter if you’re a big team or a little team, they’ll find a place for ya.
Who’s playin’ in this here tournament?
Like I said, kids and grown-ups. They got these divisions, they call ’em. 10U and Squirt, that’s for the little fellas, I reckon. And then they got older ones too. PeeWee, Mite, all sorts of names. Sounds like a whole lotta hockey players to me.
When’s it happenin’?
Well, they got ’em all year round, it seems. They just had one in October, that Oktoberfest one. And another one comin’ up in December, the Deep Freeze. Sounds cold! You gotta register and all, sign up, so they know you’re comin’. But you gotta be quick, they fill up fast.
So, is it any good, this hockey tournament?
Well, folks seem to like it. They come from all over, like I said. And they keep comin’ back, year after year. So, it must be somethin’ special, this Waterville Valley hockey tournament. Maybe I’ll even go watch one of these days, if I can figure out what a puck is.
They got a website, you know. I don’t rightly know how to use it, but they say it’s got all the information, the dates and times, and how to sign up. The Hockey Academy, they call it. Sounds fancy.
Games could start real early, like afore breakfast even, if everyone signs up. So, you gotta be an early bird to catch this hockey worm.
So, there you have it. That’s what I know about the Waterville Valley hockey tournament. Not much, maybe, but enough to get you started. If you wanna know more, you gotta go see for yourself.
