Hitting the Court Today
Alright, so I finally got myself out to the tennis court this afternoon. Been meaning to get a solid practice session in, and today felt like the day. Weather was decent, not too hot, not too windy.
My main goal today was trying out something I’m calling the ‘Wurth’ practice. Heard about a specific routine focused on consistency and placement, and ‘Wurth’ just stuck in my head for some reason. Might not even be the real name, who knows, but that’s what I decided to work on.
Getting Set Up
Grabbed my racket, couple cans of balls, water bottle – the usual stuff. Headed down to the local courts. Lucky me, court 3 was wide open. Felt good just stepping onto the baseline again.
For this Wurth thing, I needed targets. Didn’t have fancy cones, so I just used a couple of spare ball cans. Placed one crosscourt near the singles sideline, deep in the corner. Put another one down the line, maybe halfway between the service line and the baseline. Simple setup.
The Practice Itself
Started with a warm-up, of course. Knocked some balls against the backboard first, just to get the arm moving. Then did some mini-tennis, moving back slowly. Felt a bit stiff at first, always takes a few minutes to loosen up these days.
Then, I got into the main part – the Wurth drill. The idea was simple: feed myself balls and try to hit those targets consistently. Consistency was the keyword today.
-
Started with forehands, aiming for the crosscourt can. Hit maybe 50 balls. First few were all over the place, naturally. Some long, some wide. Really had to focus on watching the ball, getting my feet set, and following through.
-
After a while, I started getting a better feel. Heard that nice ‘thwack’ sound more often. Managed to hit the can a couple of times, which felt great. Mostly just getting it in that general area, though.
-
Switched to the down-the-line target next, still with the forehand. This felt harder. Less margin for error. Sent quite a few into the net or sailing wide. Really makes you appreciate the pros’ accuracy.
-
Then I repeated the whole process with my backhand. Started crosscourt, then down the line. My backhand’s always needed more work, so this was challenging. Focused hard on my technique, keeping it smooth.
Spent a good hour just on this drill. Fed myself balls from a hopper, kept the pace steady. Didn’t try to hit too hard, just focused on control and hitting those spots.
Wrapping Up
Finished up feeling pretty tired, but in a good way. Sweated a ton. My arm felt it, my legs felt it. That’s how you know you put the work in, right?
Overall, I think this Wurth practice idea, whatever you call it, was useful. It forces you to think about placement, not just hitting the ball back. Definitely highlighted areas I need to keep working on, especially that down-the-line backhand.
Packed up my gear, picked up my ‘target’ cans, and headed off. Felt good to have gotten out there and put in some focused effort. Will definitely try this routine again soon. Gotta keep grinding.
