Okay, so I wanted to talk about this VSA basketball thing I checked out recently. It wasn’t anything super serious, just something I kinda stumbled into.
Heard some folks talking about a casual game they run, you know, through the Vietnamese Student Association. Sounded pretty low-key, which is good ’cause my basketball skills are, let’s just say, very rusty. Haven’t properly played in ages. But hey, figured why not? Get out, move around a bit.
So, I grabbed my old sneakers – the ones that have seen better days, definitely – and found the gym they were using. Walked in, and yeah, it was pretty much as advertised. Just a bunch of people looking to play some ball. No intense drills, no coaches yelling, just guys (and a couple of girls) wanting to run up and down the court.
Getting started was easy enough. They were just dividing people up into teams, trying to make them somewhat even. I ended up on a team, got a pinnie tossed my way. Felt a bit awkward at first, you know, being the new face and not exactly Michael Jordan out there.
The game itself? Well, it was… something.
- Lots of running. More running than I remembered.
- My shooting was terrible. Like, really bad. Air balls? Oh yeah. Bricks? Plenty of those too.
- Passing was okay, managed not to hit anyone in the face, so that’s a win.
- Defense mostly involved me trying to stay in front of someone and not fall over.
But you know what? It was actually fun. People were cool about mistakes. Someone would miss an easy layup, and folks would just laugh it off, maybe a bit of light teasing, but nothing mean. There were some guys who were clearly pretty good, doing fancy dribbles and hitting shots, but they weren’t hogging the ball or anything. They passed it around, got everyone involved. That was nice to see.
We played a few games, maybe rotated teams once or twice. I was sweating buckets by the end, completely gassed. My legs felt like jelly walking off the court. It definitely reminded me how out of shape I am!
The vibe was just really chill. People chatting between games, joking around. It wasn’t just about the basketball; it felt more like a social thing, just using basketball as the reason to hang out. It reminded me a bit of pickup games back in the day, just less intense maybe.
So yeah, that was my little VSA basketball adventure. Nothing groundbreaking, just went out, played some ball, didn’t embarrass myself too badly, and actually had a good time. Might even go back next time they play, if my legs recover by then. It’s good to just get out and do stuff sometimes, you know?
